UK immigration policy is too strict

A parliamentary report pointed out that most Chinese students are dissatisfied with the British government's immigration policy, and 95% of respondents believe that "the policy needs to change."

The report was written by Kelly Liang and edited by Barry Gardiner, MP and chairman of the All-Party Chinese Affairs Committee of the British Parliament (APPCGB), and municipal councillors Alex Yip, Frank Leung and Jiaqi Hou. The polls and research results used in the report were provided by the British Chinese Project.

Barry Gardiner said that Chinese students account for 30% of the international students studying in the UK and are a "significant minority".相关图片

The report interviewed 988 Chinese students studying at different universities across the UK, with questions including their study abroad experience and university life experience. 96% of the students interviewed said they would like to see "better-designed and culturally-focused student activity programs" to help them "better adapt to the living and learning environment in the UK."

69% respondents said they were victims of a serious crime or someone close to them had unfortunately encountered a crime, but only 40% reported the crime to the police for help. The proportion of Chinese students who were victims in Nottingham, Leicester City, Coventry or Birmingham was higher.

The report found that nearly 50% of the students interviewed said they had been subjected to racial discrimination, including xenophobic slang, discriminatory abuse, unfair treatment, etc. Despite this, nearly 80% (79%) said they wanted to stay in the UK after graduation, and what prevented them from staying in the UK was the student visa restrictions. According to current regulations, international students must leave the UK almost immediately after graduation. Many respondents said that the student visa's strict requirements on the residence period even prevented them from attending their own graduation ceremony.

One recent graduate interviewed said, "Studying in the UK costs a lot of money. After graduation, the British government immediately drove me away, as if I were a criminal. When I left, I felt helpless and used."

Nine out of ten respondents said that if the British government's policy on international students remains as harsh as before, more Chinese students will choose other countries, rather than the UK, to study abroad in the future. The report wrote that the various restrictions imposed by immigration policies are the main reason why Chinese students "leave immediately" after graduation (62%). Another 29% respondents said that they did not stay because of cultural and language differences, and 23% respondents believed that there were better career prospects in China.

"It's important that we don't blame the universities entirely," said Barry Gardiner. "Chinese students are a relatively conservative community. The data may only reflect part of the actual problem."

The report ends with a recommendation that the government relax its immigration policy, recommending a series of policies including "strengthening investigations into crimes against Chinese students", "improving visa services", "more assistance between different agencies", etc.Interpretation of the UK Study Abroad Policy, ,UK study abroad policy analysis paper、What is the UK study abroad policy in 2023?The latest UK study abroad policy under the epidemicThe problem.
